Introduction

This was a challenge as our bookings consultant had previously not worked on curating a rota designed towards 2:1 care. There were further hurdles as the service user was both physically and verbally aggressive, this resulted in only male carers being able to be on shift, limiting the number of available staff from our bank.

Furthermore, there were fluctuations in the timings of the shift, so our bookings consultant had to be flexible and adapt quickly to any changes.

Care Package Overview

The service user was an elderly gentleman residing within a care home, they had a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and had various symptoms that stemmed from that. The gentleman was both physically and verbally abusive towards staff, which led to a decision being made that only male carers, trained in disengagement techniques, should be supplied.  At the start of the package, there was a need for 2:1 cover, staff would carry out standard personal care needs and support with medication requirements.

When this package first began, the service user was abusive, refused to engage with other residents and was difficult when it came to personal care needs. This was a challenge for our bookings consultant as staff members were reluctant to work in such an environment, combined with changing shift time and the male requirement, there was a limited number of carers who were willing and compatible with the work.

Our bookings consultant worked with our staff team and the nursing home, to curate a rota that satisfied the necessary requirements of the resident. After working with the service user for some time, they calmed and felt safe with our staff members, which resulted in reducing the need for 2:1 care to 1:1. Our staff continued to work with the resident, which resulted in there no longer being a need for constant 1:1 support.

Going Forward

The care put in place has worked well with aiding the resident. The scheduled care put in place has changed to mainly afternoons to support with the service user’s sundowning as part of their Alzheimer’s. The aim of the nursing home is to continue care until the resident has stabilised and no longer needs the care, our bookings consultant is still working alongside our staff to ensure the quality of care is present to achieve that goal.
