Introduction

After receiving a call and briefing from a local authority Social Worker, we were given 3 days to put together a rota for 24/7 one-to-one support that satisfied the service user’s needs and preferences. The short time frame was unusual, but necessary due to the service user being evicted from their residential care setting.

This presented a difficult challenge, as our bookings consultants had a short amount of time to put together a rota that satisfied all conditions. For example, the service user was to be based rurally, so car drivers were necessary to engage in the community. Similarly, our consultants had to ensure the necessary documents and training were put in place with staff to ensure an overview of the service user was available, and staff knew what support would be needed.

Care Package Overview

This package is supporting a 17-year-old who has been in a care institution for the last 2 years. The service user has a history of substance abuse, that has been a family norm since they were a child. Support from Standby staff focuses on reintegration into society, gaining confidence, seeking education and self-actualisation.

When the package first began, the service user refused to leave their room, was reluctant to maintain personal hygiene, would abscond to engage in substances and failed to attend college classes. This was a challenge for us and our staff, as proactive and time-sensitive decisions had to be made to ensure the safety of the service user.

After just a month with our staff, the service user is more confident in travelling via public transport, adheres to their curfew, bathes regularly and attends college classes. Furthermore, the service user has been encouraged to proactively engage with their drug and alcohol worker, making great progress in that regard.

Going Forward

There are still some challenges we face with supporting this package, there is a negative relationship between the service user and their social worker. A lot of blame goes towards the social worker and there is a hesitancy from the service user to engage fully. We believe that there is a pathway of communication that can be formed with the service user and their care team, through the support of our staff.

The service user has been placed in County Durham, so is away from a lot of his friends, and remaining family, who are all in Northumberland. This makes it hard to encourage the service user to regularly engage in the community. Through the great work of our car-driving staff, the service user can see their friends and is gaining more confidence in taking public transport.
